Nickel Bath Hardware - Match Finishes For a Custom Look

My husband and I are renovating our lower level bath. It's a budget makeover and to stay on budget we're keeping the existing shower and vanity. Right now we're shopping for a brushed nickel sink faucet and matching towel bars. We knew what we wanted, but when we went to the home store we became confused. Brushed nickel looked a lot like satin nickel.

Fortunately, a staff person was re-stocking shelves and we enlisted her help. "What's the difference between satin and brushed nickel?" I asked.

"You see brush marks on brushed nickel," she explained, "but you don't see them on satin." Customers are at a disadvantage, she went on to say, because the hardware industry hasn't standardized nickel finishes, and "there's a big difference from one manufacturer to another." 2. Choose hardware -- shower head, faucets, towel bars, toilet paper holder -- made by the same manufacturer.

3. Compare items side-by-side to make sure the finish matches. Ask for help if you need to take an item out of the box.

4. If you're buying hardware for older cabinets, bring a paper template with you that has the screw holes clearly marked. Look for handles with the same distance between screws.

5. As a staff person to check the computer and see if the hardware you like is in stock. In stock isn't the same as in store. The hardware may still be on the loading dock.

6. Find out when back-ordered hardware is due. Prepay for the hardware to make sure you get what you want.

Don't be afraid to ask if nickel hardware is going on sale soon. Home stores know shoppers are looking for bargains and will be glad to share this information with you. One staff person told me to come at 9 a.m. Now that's what I call customer service!

Towel Stands

Towel stands are one of those really creative alternatives to drilling holes in the wall. They're the perfect solution for people who just don't want the hassle of measuring, drilling, checking for level, etc. And those darned drywall anchors can be such a pain. Towel stands are also great for people who like to change things up periodically - the furniture movers and re-arrangers. You know who you are.

There are those at the other end of the spectrum who never want to change anything. Everything is fixed and built in. For the rest of us who can't live without mixing it up, who frankly, if we had our way, would periodically change the floor plan of our house if we could, towel stands were invented. At least that's my theory, and I'm sticking to it; mostly because I am one of those people and I love towel stands.

The biggest argument I've heard against them is that they take up valuable floor space. To which I say, "Just how valuable is that 6 or 7-inch space next to the base boards anyway?" That's the space needed for a towel ladder type stand. The thing I love about these is that you just lean them against the wall and if you have forced air heat, they double as a drying rack.

Ladder towel stands take a whole 30 seconds to "install", and they solve one of my pet peeves - hand towels left on the counter or floor because a small child couldn't reach the ring or bar that he strained to remove the towel from in order to dry his little hands. A hand towel on a lower rung means the towel doesn't have to be removed to be used. Of course, that doesn't mean it won't be, but at least you have a valid reason for correcting the behavior.

Kids aside, counter top towel stands are also a favorite for me because they're great for guest towels. You don't have to have a fancy bathroom to have guest towels; you only have to want guests to use particular towels as opposed to your personal ones. And if counter space is at a premium, you can stash the towel stand after the guests have gone.

I found it really annoying to clean for company, put out all my nice towels and then have to wash every single one of them because almost everyone who used the bathroom had wiped their hands on a separate towel. I use a counter model with multiple towel rings or bars. Everyone seems to want to use a fresh towel, which I suppose is why, (before I instituted the counter top stand routine,) all my personal towels got used.

Other than the practical side of towel stands in general, they really dress up an otherwise ordinary looking bathroom. You can spend as little as and as much as 0 or more. Towel stands are available in a wide variety of finishes and materials; from stained wood to high shine chrome; from bamboo to wrought iron or solid brass. Some floor models come with added features like accessory baskets. Some are even heated; and believe it or not, the heated ones aren't even the most expensive.

Regardless of the size of your budget or your bathroom, you can find a towel stand to fit both. Be sure to take measurements and have fun shopping!

1. Lightweight: Weight is very important when traveling in an RV. The more weight you put into RV bathroom furniture, the harder you will work your engine. You may also slow your travels. Think lightweight! The wooden magazine rack may look better, but the plastic one may weigh less.

2. Practical and efficient: Add nothing that doesn't earn its keep. RV and camping stores offer hundreds of appealing gadgets. Some serve no real purpose, or do not fulfill promises. When you look at bathroom furniture, consider what it will do for you. Look around to see if there is another item that will better do the job. Small baskets may help you organize, but small boxes may do it better.

3. Mildew-resistant: An RV bathroom is a small, closed space. Unless you want to spend hours scrubbing mildew, make sure all bathroom furniture is mildew-resistant. 5. Stable: Any RV bathroom furniture you add must stay in place when traveling rough roads. Even if you don't plan to go off-road to a remote campsite, you will encounter tough patches in road construction. Items that will not stay put require frequent packing and unpacking.

RV bathroom furniture that does not meet these criteria should be considered carefully. Chances are good that you will trash it or replace it soon if it fails in one or more points.

An RV remodel of the bathroom gives you opportunity to put some of these principles into practice.

For example, an RV tub may have a glass sliding door. It looks good, and you found a piece of 2x2 that keeps it from sliding while you're traveling. If you replaced it during your RV model, however, you could lighten your load. Install a lightweight, accordion pleated door in its place. The lighter door will lock in place for travel.

Your RV remodel might be even more radical. You may decide that no one uses that tub. Showers are quicker. Replace the tub with a white corner shower, opening up storage space.
