Shower Enclosures: The Basics of Installation

If you are doing a bathroom remodel and its time to put in a new shower enclosure there are two different styles of shower enclosures to choose from - frameless and framed. The frameless style is made with a heavier glass and as a result, it is heavier, more expensive and more time consuming to install.

The framed shower enclosure is lighter, cheaper and easier to install. This style is also more durable and can take more punishing use. Framed enclosures themselves come in with a swing door or a sliding door. Which style works best for you will depend on the size of the room and having at least 30" inches of clearance to swing open.

Swing doors have glass that is normally between ¼" to 3/8" thick that is wrapped into an aluminum extension. Clear glass is the most popular style although there are a lot of choices out there to pick from in door styles.

Slider doors can come in either frameless or semi frameless style. The glass thickness is generally ¼" to ½" thick but the most popular thickness is 3/8" and again the clear glass is the most popular choice with these doors.

By the time you are ready to install a new enclosure you should have already measured so you know what size will fit. If you took out an old shower enclosure nothing can be easier than to measure the old one to make sure the new one is the same size. If you are changing styles to go from a sliding door to a swing door make sure you have the clearance to do it.

Installing the shower enclosure itself is a breeze since they are made to be installed easily within just two to three hours. Make sure the area you are preparing to install the new enclosure in is level, and the walls and floor are in good shape to support the installation. If the walls are off by more than ¼" the installation will be off and there is the potential for future unseen water damage.

If everything is ready to install the first step is to cut the bottom track to size. Then determine where the bottom track should go and position the wall jambs. Drill the mounting holes for the wall jambs and install the bottom track guides. Then caulk and install the bottom track and wall jambs. Then you are going to cut and install the top track and install the rollers for the door. Finally you are ready to install the door handles and towel holders before you complete your project by caulking it all in.
